Spelling and Pronunciation of Names and Symbols of Measurement Units

Abstract

Based on the historical background the paper describes the current state of the standardization of measurement units. The article presents the basic and derived SI units as well as non-SI units accepted for use with the International System. Moreover the rules of correct spelling and pronunciation names and symbols of measurement units are discussed. Similar issues are explained in relation to multiples and submultiples of these units and to unit symbols obtained by multiplication and/or by division. Possible misunderstandings when using non-SI units have been pointed out. These principles should be observed in all the scientific texts and lectures

Streszczenie

Na tle zarysu historii standaryzacji jednostek miar artykuł przedstawia jej stan aktualny. Wymienia jednostki podstawowe i jednostki pochodne układu SI oraz jednostki dopuszczone do stosowania z jednostkami SI. Omawia i uzasadnia zasady zapisywania jednostek głównych i jednostek złożonych oraz zasady tworzenia jednostek krotnych. Wskazuje możliwe nieporozumienia przy stosowaniu jednostek spoza układu SI. Podane zasady powinny być przestrzegane w tekstach i innych wypowiedziach naukowych.
