Powers and compensation in circuits with nonsinusoidal and asymmetrical voltages and currents

s. 58-65 DOI:

Abstract

An increase in the number and in power of nonlinear and periodically switched loads results in an increase in distortion of voltages and currents in distribution systems. Moreover, generators driven by renewable sources of energy are interfaced to power systems through power electronics inverters, which produce the voltage of sine waveform only approximately. The development of electrical equipment for such conditions and its maintenance have become more expensive, which is a challenge for electrical engineering community. This paper presents a history of studies on energy flow in the presence of the voltage and current distortion and compiles some misinterpretations related to definitions of power properties and interpretation of power phenomena in electrical systems.
